Why are orchids so difficult to take care of?
Orchids actually have a much more fickle reputation than they deserve. The primary mistakes people make when they start out attempting to grow orchids are those of excess. If you give an orchid too much sunlight, it will scald. If you give it too much water, or soil that doesn’t drain well enough, it will drown. If you ensure that your soil is properly draining, and avoid over-watering an orchid, you are more than halfway to producing a beautiful flower. All that’s left to do is find a place in your house (or yard, if you live in a temperate state) where the plant will get just a few hours of indirect sunlight each day.
What is the difference between direct and indirect sunlight?
When you are shopping for plants and trees, it is always a good idea to ask about the sunlight requirements for the plant in question. Direct sunlight is the kind that occurs from about 10 in the morning until about 5 in the afternoon during summer months. It has the most energy in it, and plants that need quite a bit of energy for growth benefit from large amounts of direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight happens in the hours just after sunrise or just before sunset. If a plant requires indirect sunlight that means that it does better with less light, rather than more.
What sorts of services do landscapers offer?
A landscaping service does two things primarily. They create and maintain beautiful yards. Creating a yard is the big ticket item for any landscaper, it takes weeks of labor and thousands of dollars worth of materials to create a yard from scratch. However, there are not enough of these jobs available to keep a landscaper employed full time, so they also maintain existing yards. This maintenance includes everything from weeding, tree trimming, and lawn mowing to fertilizing and tearing out dead shrubs and/or trees.
